Footballing Grandad and Granddaughter duo enjoy a special family moment as
Rugby Borough WFC head into their last game of the season
This weekend’s FA Women’s National League clash between Rugby Borough WFC and Hull City Ladies FC will be more than just a game for 24-year-old fullback Kelis Barton. It marks a heartwarming full-circle moment in her football journey, as she plays just down the road from where her grandad’s football legacy began in Barton Upon Humber, with a nod to her surname.
Born in Kirkland, Washington, Kelis holds dual citizenship with the US and UK and made her mark stateside, most recently for Minnesota Aurora. This year she fulfilled a lifelong dream of turning professional in England, proudly following in the footsteps of her grandfather, Frank Barton, who began his career at Scunthorpe United before playing for Carlisle United, Blackpool, Grimsby Town, AFC Bournemouth then Seattle Sounders, and even representing England U21s.

Kelis joined Rugby Borough WFC this season and has worn number 51 since the age of six. Ready to line up against Hull City Ladies this Sunday, the match is made even more special by the presence of her grandad’s old football friends in the stands, including his childhood teammate, John Hayes.
Speaking of the family occasion Kelis said: “It’s going to be a really special moment for me. To be playing in England and making my grandad proud means everything. It feels like things have come full circle.”
Speaking with pride about his granddaughter Frank said: “To see Kelis out there doing what she loves, here in England, just like I did, it makes me very proud. She’s got the heart and the hard work; she’s definitely inherited the Barton boots!”
A family’s footballing story continues, an important reminder of the brilliant moments and memories in the world of football.
